Aimed to those who enjoy adventure and outdoor experiences, this activity demands an average level of physical fitness as it involves a three-hour-long trek over uneven terrain.
Departing from El Calafate through the Provincial Route N°11, after 33km East, the National Route N°40 is taken to drive 70km to get to El Chaltén. The landscape is breathtaking: Argentine Lake, Santa Cruz River, La Leona River and its magnificent valley and a panoramic view of the Andes Mountain Range, including Fitz Roy Mount, until getting to Parador “La Leona”, witness and protagonist of more than 110 years of Argentine Southern Patagonia’s legendary history. Declared historical and cultural heritage of Santa Cruz Province, this place has once been visited by Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid before they escaped to Chile, after stealing the Bank of London and Tarapacá in Rio Gallegos. 
After a 15-minute stop, the trip continues West along Viedma Lake southern margin, until reaching the slopes of Los Hornos Hill (Santa Teresita Fields) at 12:00 pm approximately.
Once there, the terrain huge depression can be observed for the first time and the trek is started to explore the fossils. Lying on the surface, great amounts of petrified trunks can be appreciated, some of them being 1.20mt in diameter. They are testimony of ancient ages when the climate was completely different from today’s, a climate that fostered the existence of huge and abundant flora. Occasionally, uncovered fossils from different types of dinosaurs can be observed.
At the middle of the circuit, lunch is offered: boxes lunches-.
This place is a natural depression, protected from the wind by Los Hornos Hill. Due to its being in the middle of the steppe, it is extremely dry and its climactic conditions are mild.
Departure back to El Calafate is at 14:00hs approximately. After another stop at Parador “La Leona” the trip continues, arriving town at 17:00hs approximately.

Difficulty: Medium. This tour is not suitable for: people suffering heart conditions, disorders in the spine, knees or ankles, or people who recently underwent surgery. Neither suitable for people who suffer vertigo and for pregnant women. People who suffer allergies (insect bites / dust, etc.) should take their regular medication.

What to wear? Comfortable and warm clothes, waterproof jacket or windbreaker, cordoned sports shoes or hiking boots. Not allowed rubber boots, apres ski or high heels. Sunglasses, sunscreen, gloves, hat for sun or warm to cold case.
